Library Intern

Department: Library

Supervision: Library Director
Hours worked: Up to 20 hours per week. Includes some evenings.

Job Purpose Summary

This position is a 12 week paid summer internship opportunity for individuals seeking to gain experience in library work. The Library Intern will work under the supervision of library staff and will perform various duties related to the daily operation of the library as well as assist with the library’s Summer Reading Program. This position is 10 to 20 hours per week for 12 weeks. No previous experience in libraries is required. Because this position works directly with children, a background check is required.

Essential Functions

  • Assists library staff in checking materials in and out to patrons and issuing library cards.
  • Shelves library materials to their proper place. 
  • Help staff create book displays
  • Helps patrons in the use of the internet, word processing, photocopying, and general use of the computers.
  • Assist with cleaning and general maintenance of the library building.
  • May assist in planning, preparing, and conducting programs such as summer reading, storytimes, and adult programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Employee Requirements

Should have a high interest in providing quality library service to the public. Ability to lift/carry or push/pull 20 lbs. Good vision. Physically able to do frequent bending and reaching. Ability to stand for extended periods of time. Knowledge of or ability to learn alphanumeric order. Ability to work independently with only general supervision. Knowledge of or ability to learn library computer applications. Ability to type. Able to multitask in a sometimes busy environment. Must enjoy working with the public and have good communication skills in order to provide positive customer service.
